Amazon.com Choosing Guide
Five Hints for Acquiring Door HardwareThere’s nothing at all that enhances style and function fairly like new door hardware. It’s the very first factor that catches the eye at the front door, and it feels excellent in hand all through the household. Here are five recommendations to simplify the choosing process.

What are the different types of door hardware?
Entry hardware installs on exterior doors, and contains knobs or handlesets (deal with with deadbolt) that lock with keys or touch pads from the outside and turnbuttons from inside. A deadbolt lock optimizes security.Privacy hardware is designed for bedrooms and bathrooms, locking with turnbuttons and not requiring keys.Passage knobs and levers are developed for hallway doors, laundry rooms and closet doors that latch but don’t lock.Dummy knobs and levers are decorative hardware pieces developed for pantry doors or other doors that only call for a pull to open, with no latch or lock.

What safety attributes are available? The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) sets distinctive grades for door hardware, such as Grade 1 (simple), Grade 2 (intermediate), and Grade three (highest). These days, with extra and additional intruders applying "bump keys"--a essential that can open nearly any lock--or locksmith tools once intended only to resolve accidental lockouts, many manufacturers offer bump-resistant cylinders.
Will it fit my door?
  • Normal doors are either 1-three/eight or 1-three/four inches thick, with most hardware designed to adjust for either. Extension kits are obtainable for thicker doors.

  • Most hardware is interchangeable, only requiring that the backset (the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the knob or lock, normally 2-3/8 or 2-three/four inches) matches the hole(s) in the door so that the latch or bolt throws appropriately. Some hardware sets adjust for both backset lengths.
  • Levers come in each left- and correct-handed models. To identify the appropriate handing, look at the door’s hinges from outside the door. If the hinges are on the left, you will have to have a left-handed lever. If the hinges are on the appropriate, you want a appropriate-handed lever.

Can I install it myself? Most door hardware, including keypads and deadbolts, installs in under an hour with only a Philips screwdriver. Most keypads are powered by batteries, so no wiring is required. Handlesets oftentimes call for a drill. If the door or doorframe is not predrilled, door hardware frequently comes with a paper template to mark holes for drilling and sawing with typical spade bits and hole saws. Specialized tool sets also are obtainable for door-hardware installation.
If you want to use one particular key on many entry handles or deadbolts, you will want a locksmith to "re-key" all the locks to the same important. This should really be carried out prior to installation and only will operate if all the hardware comes from the exact same manufacturer.
What cool hardware characteristics are readily available today?Keypad locks and deadbolts let you add and delete a number of user codes as required, providing family members, neighbors, baby- or pet-sitters with very easy-to-recall codes. Cool for parents and awesome for keeping kids out of cleaning closets and utility rooms, some keypads have auto-lock mechanisms that lock following a few seconds in case you forget.Once utilized only for government applications (as depicted in high-tech spy movies), biometric keyless entry systems, which scan dozens of several fingerprints for uncomplicated access, also are expanding in popularity.

Customer Reviews

I just installed some of these doorknobs in my house today. They are sturdy and attractive. It was very easy to reverse the knob to switch from left-hand to right-hand. You basically push a small tool into a hole to pop off the handles and then switch them.
My only complaint is that they did not come with an optional square-corner face plates for the area around the latch and the strike plate. It comes with a rounded corner only.

Schlage just makes really good hardware. I needed to replace the passage set on to solid wood fire door to my garage so I searched long and hard for the best deal. Amazon was the best answer by a significant margin so I went for it. As expected the unit installed and works fine and I had it in a couple days.
